『エル・トポ』（1970年）、『ホーリー・マウンテン』（1973年）、『サンタ・サングレ／聖なる血』（1989年）で世界を熱狂させた伝説的映画監督ホドロフスキーの新作「リアリティのダンス」とドキュメンタリー「ホドロフスキーのDUNE」が、今年の夏、日本で公開される記念に今回の展覧会を開くことを決めた。

彼の広い活動や表現の中でもっとも知られていないのが絵の才能である。1967-1973年の間メキシコの新聞 "EL Heraldo" 誌の週末増刊号に、合計284ページにわたり連載したファブラス・パニコス（パニックものがたり）ではカフカ的実存主義に支配されたナンセンス・ストーリーから次第に自身が影響を受けた禅の悟りに関するものになっていく。このようにプロの漫画家として彼は絶えず絵を描いていたのだが、画家として発表したことはなかった。

はじまりは妻、パスカルが夫の古いデッサンを見て、もっと描いたらよいのに、と勧めたことからである。こうして新しいドローイングのスタイルが生まれ、彼らの個展が開かれるようになった。

今回の展示は、共作のシリーズの中で2012年11月にパリ市立近代美術館で発表された作品が中心となる。日本で彼らのドローイングが見られるのは初めてである。また今回の特徴として、これらの作品はマルチプルで限定エディション、すべてに二人の直筆のサインがついている。「あまりに大切なので高い値段をつけて売れないようにしている」と笑うホドロフスキーであるが、店主アツコ・バルーがパリで彼ら夫婦にお願いして、オリジナルではなくハイクオリティーのジクレーにより、ファンにとって求めやすい価格帯で、展示と販売ができるようになった。

二人の共作は「リアリティのダンス」におけるパスカルの衣装とアレハンドロの脚本、監督でも既に果実を結んでいるが、今回のシリーズはホドロフスキー曰く「私たちは子供ができないからこれらの絵が自分たちの子供なんだ」という残酷にして美しい愛の世界を表している。インタビューでも二人はお互いの自由を大切にしつつ、ドローイングによってお互いをもっと深く知り、もっと深く愛せるようになった、と。またホドロフスキーは「自分の世界は煉獄だ、彼女の世界は清純なる天国の世界だ、彼女が私の黒いビジョンを救ってくれる」とも言っている。実際、残酷でシニカル、夢想の世界を描きながら甘酸っぱい色彩が血肉を与えているこれらのドローイングは大変魅力的である。

Jodorowsky was born in 1929 in Chile and has lived mainly in Paris since 1955. He has written routines for some of Marcel Marceau's best known pantomime works as well as taking part in the surrealist movement. He has also worked on a surprisingly large number of stories for 'bande dessinée' (comics) and his astonishing creative energy, both in terms of quality and quantity, can also be seen in the world of cinema, tarot divination and psychomagic, earning him the title of the cult king. He is a super human, who continues to create to this day, and has influenced many, including David Lynch, Shuji Terayama and Katsuhiro Otomo, a manga artist. 
We have decided to put on the exhibition to commemorate the releases of his new film, 'The Dance of Reality', and the documentary film, 'Jodorowsky's Dune', in Japan this summer.
Of his wide-ranging activities and modes of expression, his talent for painting is the least known. 'Fabulas Pánicas' (Panic Fables), a weekly comic strip, which totals 284 pages, was published between 1967 and 1973 in the weekend edition of the El Heraldo de México, a Mexican newspaper. It started off as a nonsensical story, influenced by Kafkaesque existentialism, but gradually became more about Zen enlightenment, which Jodorowsky himself was influenced by. Like this work he has always drawn as a professional comic artist but he had not exhibited as a painter until recently.
Things changed when his wife, Pascale, saw his old sketches and suggested he painted more. As a result, a new drawing style was born and they began to exhibit their works.
The exhibition at atsuko barouh consists mainly of works from the collaborative series, which were exhibited in November 2011 at the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris. This will be the first time for their drawings to be exhibited in Japan. What is also specific to this exhibition is that the works are limited editions with their signatures on each print. 'They are so precious to me, so I price them very high in order not to sell' says Jodorowsky as he laughs. The gallery owner, Atsuko Barouh asked the Jodorowskys in Paris if the works could be reproduced as high quality giclee prints for the gallery. As a result, it has been made possible to exhibit and sell these works at affordable price for the fans.
The fruit of their collaboration can already be seen in 'The Dance of Reality', in which Alejandro wrote the screenplay and directed, while Pascale worked on the costumes. On the series, Jodorowsky says 'we cannot have children, so these drawings are our children'. The works represent a world of cruel but beautiful love. In the interviews, they have said that while respecting each other's freedom, they were able to love each other more deeply by learning more about each other through the drawings. Jodorowsky also says 'my world is purgatory. Her world is a pure heavenly one. She rescues my dark visions'. Sure enough, the drawings, which are very attractive, depict cruel and cynical dream world with bittersweet colours providing flesh and blood.

Pascale Montandon-Jodorwsky: Visual Artist and designer. She works with graphic art and spatial design, placing importance on dynamic and still worlds, as well as on the sensibility which moves in space and time. Notable works include set design for Carolyn Carlson, spatial design for the reception area of a French company, Imerys, and costume design for the film, 'The Dance of Reality'.
