Pierre Carniaux/Thierry Fournier Shinjiro Maeda

Digital technology and the Internet have resulted in alternative methods of expression which goes beyond the existing media and notions of temporal axis in the field of video and film. This exhibition introduces works from France and Japan, which deviates from monistic narratives, as ‘Alter-narrative’. Stories are re-woven and in the gaps between the weaves, multi-layered temporality and space, as well as new meanings will emerge.

Pierre Carniaux/Thierry Fournier, ‘Déplis’ (2012):
 Déplis means ‘to expand’ in French and is an interactive work which enables the participant to weave different stories through selecting scenes, stories and temporality of the film by themselves by using iPad. The work is based on Carniaux’s film, ‘Last Room’ which shows guests at love hotels and capsule hotels in Japan talking about fantasies. By expanding on this film, Fournier aims to broaden the senses of the viewers through ‘exploration as if playing music and plotting their own journeys with a sensibility of playing a game’.

Pierre Carniaux
: Born1979 in Paris. Film director/photographer/actor. 
His work merges elements of art and documentaries. ‘Last Room’ is his first feature length film, shot in Japan with funding from Villa Medicis Hors les Murs. The film was premiered in the French Competition section of the international documentary film festival, FID Marseille 2011.

Thierry Fournier: 
Artist and exhibition organizer. 
His practice encompasses installation, digital media, video, sound work and performance and is based on the view that the body and the perception determines the relationship of individuals with the world (poetically, socially and politically). Whether it is interactive or a fixed work and whether it depends on a physical place or not, his work brings together different times and spaces, which are in opposition to each other, to create situations where fiction and reality, interior and exterior, life and death and human and machine coexists.

Shinjiro Maeda, ‘Between Yesterday & Tomorrow’ (2011-2013): 
‘Between Yesterday & Tomorrow’ is an improvised film comprising of multiple 5 minute movies made by several video artists through instructions given by Maeda. The plan was announced about two weeks after the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011. Though the ideas behind each work, which were received by 2013, were left to the individual artists, they form a loose network of ideas as mediated by Maeda.

Shinjiro Maeda: 
Born 1969 in Osaka. Video artist and an associate professor at IAMAS (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences). 
He began working with videos at the beginning of 1990s and has shown in film festivals and exhibitions both in Japan and overseas. He has also worked in collaboration with artists from other creative fields such as performing art and contemporary art. His web movie project, ‘Between Yesterday & Tomorrow’, received the Excellence Award in the Art Division of the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2012. He is also a supervisor for a DVD label, SOL CHORD.

In addition to the exhibition, we will be screening selected video works from Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains (France) and IAMAS (The Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences) in Ogaki, Gifu, Japan: Latest edition of ‘PANORAMA’, produced annually by Le Fresnoy (selected by Alain Fleischer), and the selection of works from IAMAS (selected by Shinjiro Maeda).

After the screening of the ‘Last Room’, there will be a discussion between Carniaux, who appears in the film, and Miura who has known Carniaux for sometime.
